　During the Meiji era, the main objective to learn English was
　to gain the ability to learn from English books about advanced
　Western technology.Translating those books into Japanese
　to spread their contents throughout Japan was of utmost
　importance, so the grammar translation method was
　considered to be the best approach to language teaching.


　Japan’s role in the world has changed a great deal from what
　it was during the Meiji period.　Today, it is not enough to
　simply read and listen to English. We must also share our
　knowledge, opinions and technology with people from all over
　the world.With increasing globalization, we also need to
　cultivate a positive attitude toward communicating with the
　international community using English as the lingua franca. 


　After the disastrous earthquake on 3/11, English has played,
　and will continue to play a vital role in our recovery as a way
　to help us receive help from our friends from abroad and as a
　way to help us share our experience with the world.
